Welcome to TORO

4 min read

So you’ve got TORO up and running. Let’s take a quick look around so you know where everything is.

The Top Bar #

Right along the top of the screen, you’ll see the name of whoever’s logged in, today’s date and time, and the station name. It’s a simple way to confirm you’re on the right register with the right employee signed in. If something looks off, you’ll catch it here first.

The Left Side: Your Transaction #

This is where the action happens. Every item you ring up appears here as a line showing the item name, quantity, and price. As you add items, a running total builds at the bottom — including tax. Think of it as the customer’s receipt being built in real time.

When the list is empty, you’re ready for a new sale. When items are stacked up, you’re mid-transaction.

The Right Side: Finding Products #

The top of the right panel has a search bar. You can click into it and type a product name, scan a barcode, or enter an item ID. Below that, you’ll find product category buttons — quick shortcuts to browse cigars, accessories, beverages, or whatever categories you’ve set up.

Underneath the categories, you’ll find the action buttons that drive a transaction forward: Hold (park a sale for later), Recall (bring back a held sale), Customer (attach a loyalty member), and Payment (close out the sale).

The Bottom Bar #

Along the very bottom of the screen sit a handful of function buttons. Dashboard opens your management tools and settings. Reports gets you to sales data and analytics. Clock handles employee time punches. Settings gives quick access to display and preference options.

Keyboard, Mouse, or Touch — Your Call #

TORO works however you’re comfortable. Type item names on a keyboard, click with a mouse, or tap everything on a touchscreen. Most shops use a mix depending on the situation — scanning barcodes for speed, tapping buttons for walk-in lounge sales. There’s no wrong way to do it.

Keyboard Shortcuts #

You don’t need to memorize any of these on day one, but they’ll speed things up once you get comfortable.

On the main screen:

  • Spacebar — Start a new transaction (when you’re on the idle/login screen)
  • Spacebar — Return to the main menu (when the search box is empty and you’re browsing categories)
  • Enter — Search for an item after typing in the search box
  • Escape — Close whatever dialog or popup is open

At the payment screen:

  • F2 — Select Cash
  • F3 — Select Credit/Debit Card
  • F12 — Charge to Account
  • Escape — Cancel and go back

During age verification:

  • F1 — Look up the customer’s account
  • F5 — Bypass verification (if you have permission)
  • F12 — Manually enter a birthday

Everywhere: Scanning a barcode at any time automatically adds the item to the current transaction — no clicking required.

The “?” Button — Help Is Always One Click Away #

Modern TORO dialogs have a small “?” button in the top-right of the header, right next to the close button. Click it and you’ll see a quick menu with the most common things you’d want from any screen:

  • Help — opens the online manual in your browser, right to the relevant article if one’s available
  • Report an Issue — submits a bug report straight from the screen you’re on, no hunting through menus
  • Lock Screen — locks the current window so a nosy coworker can’t peek at it while you step away
  • Request Access — if the screen has functions you don’t have permission for, you can ask a manager to grant access right here instead of walking over and logging them in

Admin and dev users also get extra options on that menu for configuring access levels and user preferences for the window.

It’s a small addition that pays off when you’re training new employees — they can hit the ? on any screen and get answers without having to find you or dig through the help manual themselves.

That’s the lay of the land. Once you’ve oriented yourself, head over to Running Your First Sale to see it all in motion.
